The History of Chip ‘n Dale

Chip ‘n Dale made their first appearance in 1943 in the cartoon Private Pluto.  Although they looked a bit different and weren’t named, certain characteristics were recognizable.  They made their mark then and are now the world’s most famous animated chipmunks.

Chip ‘n Dale were created by the Walt Disney Company.  Their names were suggested by Bill Henson who was the story artist in the studio at the time.  Originally they were created with the same colored noses, but nobody could tell them apart.  So Dale was given a red nose and Chip a black one.  Chip’s voice was done by James MacDonald from 1943 to 1960 and then by Tress MacNeille from 1989 onwards.  Dale’s voice was done by Dressie Flynn from 1943 to 1960 and then by Corey Burton from 1989 onwards.

Disney's chip n daleChip was made to be a logical schemer, and Dale was made to be more dimwitted and goofy.  Chip was given a black nose to resemble a chocolate chip to help people to remember who he is.  He also has smooth short fur on top of his head while Dale’s fur is ruffled.

Their second cartoon was called Squatters Rights and they were also up against poor Pluto the Dog.  Mickey Mouse also featured in this cartoon, but he never realizes the existence of the chipmunks.

In the 1950’s Disney’s Chip n Dale were given their own series, but only three cartoons were made in the end.  In 1951 they did Chicken In The Rough.  In 1952 they made Two Chips And A Miss, and then in 1954 The Lone Chipmunks.

Disney’s Chip n Dale only officially got their names in 1947 in a cartoon entitled Chip ‘n Dale where they antagonize Donald Duck.  From then on they continued appearing in cartoons usually annoying and terrorizing poor old Donald Duck.

In the short cartoon Two Chips and a Miss, we see Chip ‘n Dale fighting with each other for the first time.  In this short, they spend their time vying for the attention of a certain Clarice who is a performer at the acorn club.

They also feature in the rescuers which is a more recent animated Disney Movie.  I am certain we have not seen the last of these two adorable chipmunks.
